CHAPTER VII

John had nightmares that night.

They were powerful yet vague. Uncertain landscapes of darkness and terror, with midnight black figures sporting glowing red eyes stalking them. He could remember running and fighting in his nightmares that night.

But mostly he was aware that Yelena was not there.

Yelena was missing. Had she been taken from him? Had she left him? He remembered terror, and loneliness like nothing ever before felt…

…

John’s eyes snapped open and he sat bolt upright. He felt her moving, shifting in the bed beside him, and twisted around to look for her, to see her, because he had to.

“Yelena-” he began, but froze up as he saw that it was not Yelena he was sharing a bed with, but someone who he couldn’t in that moment recall the name of. A tanned, weathered, strikingly sexy face stared back up at him.

“John? What’s wrong?”

Lydia. She was Lydia. And they were in an inn, in the basement of an inn in the elven settlement of Brynne in the Redwood forest.

“I, um...I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you,” he murmured, suddenly embarrassed, yet also terribly lonely. He wanted desperately to see Yelena just then.

“It’s fine. What’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare?” she asked, sitting up, rubbing sleep from her eyes.

“Yeah,” he replied quietly. “I just, uh...I need to see Yelena, is all.”

“Okay. Come on, let’s get up and shower, then we go back to Indigo’s place,” Lydia said.

She got out of bed and he hesitated for a few seconds. His head was still rushing with the maelstrom of intensely horrific emotions the nightmares had conjured. He felt almost overwhelmed in their aftermath, like he was trying to keep a boat from capsizing in the wake of a terrible storm. Taking a deep breath, he let it out slowly and then rubbed sleep from his own eyes. Finally, he stood up and crossed the room with Lydia.

“Thanks,” he said quietly.

“It’s okay. I understand. I’ve had some bad, bad nightmares in my time,” she said. They got into the shower stall together and Lydia activated it. “Would you like a hug?”

“I...yeah.”

She enfolded him in her strong arms and held his head against her bare chest. He hugged her back. It wasn’t the same as physical affection from Yelena, but it was appreciated and at least somewhat effective nonetheless. They stood there like that for a few moments, nude and wet, hugging in the warm waterfall.

When he let go of her, John felt better. Not great, nor even good, but better, at least.

“I, uh, don’t suppose you’d be up for some sex?” Lydia asked.

“I...” he hesitated again, considering it. Part of him really wanted to, but another part of him knew he probably couldn’t get it up, not right now.

“It’s okay,” she said, “I understand.”

“Thanks,” he repeated. “I’m sorry, it’s not you.”

“I know,” Lydia replied, smiling kindly at him. She passed him a bar of soap and a washcloth. “I’ve encountered this before, been on both ends of it. Sometimes, you don’t realize
